We preferred to shoot the film in West Africa and at first we had been going to shoot a part of the movie there but logistically it was extremely challenging. We did send out a smaller splinter device to Ghana just after the most important generation wrapped. It felt crucial to shoot a little something in West Africa.
Are there any shooting locations that really stood out to you?
In the vicinity of Cape Town, we employed Palmiet Seaside for our shorelines. The estuary there doubled as a river for when Nanisca [Davis] and Nawi [Thuso Mbedu] make their escape around the wall at Quidah. In Cape Town, we designed out the Castle of Very good Hope to provide as our Port of Quidah. There is also the Wiesenhof Nature Reserve, in which the Agojie battle the Oyo.
As cinematographer, how did you want to capture the earth of the Agojie?
With the Agojie, we moved the digital camera fluidly and gracefully. It was also critical to distinction the natural beauty of Dahomey with the ugliness of Quidah [a port and hub of the slave trade]. The horror of the trade in human everyday living. Quidah we photographed with a handheld digital camera and embraced the distinction of the African sunlight.
Through your off-hours, how did you and the rest of the forged and crew expend your absolutely free time? Are there any spots—restaurants, bars, inns, museums, landmarks—that you loved?
We didn’t have substantially time off We filmed for 6 days a week and Gina and I would operate with each other on the seventh day to get ready for the subsequent week.
